  • Political Animals, a limited series event on the USA Network, teamed up with Campfire in New York to launch an in-story, newspaper style website. Avex Designs was asked to work with Campfire on the development of this project. Campfire designed the layout, and I worked with them to launch a completely responsive website. Much of the responsive design was done in the browser, rather than designing various different mockups. It was a great project to be apart of!

  • HashTip is a social commerce network where moms share tips on kids products, services, activities, and deals. Avex was asked to help craft the overall user-experience including designing the desktop website and iOS application. HashTip did not want us to just "push pixels around", they wanted Avex to be involved in the entire process as well. We helped to define the brand's online presence. This is a great start-up, and we are continuing to work with them, to refine the service more and more everyday.

  • The H2O Generation’s classic retro boards and paddles are handmade from materials of the upmost quality. I wanted to capture an almost rustic, earthy, surfer feel, but still stay modern. Just like H2O's boards, this website may look retro, but the technology behind it is not. We used HTML5 and CSS3 to get some really nice effects. As well as WordPress custom post types, Google's API for the store locator, a blog, and profile pages for each employee.

  • Childish Gambino (Donald Glover) needed a website, aside from his personal blog www.iamdonald.com. As far as the design goes, Donald wanted to keep it really simple. But the back-end is built on WordPress, giving the artist and record label, Glassnote Records, control over the website. It has all the basics to keep you updated on Childish Gambino. News, Tour Dates and Media.

  • Grammy Award Winner Phoenix needed a way to get the word out about their concert at Madison Square Garden. We utilized social networking, by giving fans the chance to hear an exclusive track once they re-tweeted a post about the event. This idea was such a hit, the label did the same for other bands on it's roster.

  • Smart Tax reached out to Avex to help re-design and develop their online brand experience. We completely started from scratch, creating a custom user-expeience, focusing on the brand identity. Using WordPress as the backend, Smart Tax can control their content and create blog posts. The website is super fast and very SEO friendly. We continue to work with Smart Tax to improve their brand, and help with SEO and Social Campaigns. They have locations across the country, so when tax season comes around, check them out!

  • Singer / song writer, Sarah Solovay needed a one page website to showcase her music, videos and news. I integrated her Twitter posts and YouTube channel to display on the page. Fans can connect with Sarah, join her on Twitter and Facebook, as well as share her page on their own social networks. This site also includes a Flash MP3 Player for desktop users. And of course an HTML5 backup for everyone on their fancy smart phones and tablets.

  • Baltimore Hardcore at it's finest! These guys are heavy...Really heavy. It was a lot of fun designing this Twitter App for Trapped Under Ice. The band and label used this one page application to promote the single "Jail" - Now, open that pit up!

  • Bank Of America & MLB teamed up at The All-Star Game in 2011 to spread the word about MLB Mobile Pay Tags & MLB Extra Bases. I was asked to develop a touch screen application for kiosks located at the Stadium in Arizona. We also animated a screen saver for the kiosks to play when a user was not interacting with the application. This was a great project to be involved in and a great opportunity to explore different technologies. The creative was designed and art directed by Salvatore Fabbella.

About Avex - John Surdakowski

Designing and developing digital experiences in New York since 2002; I've worked on a ton of great projects. Some of my specialties include: websites, blogs, mobile sites, custom WordPress themes, social media solutions, iPhone / iPad apps, branding, UI / UX design and rich media campaigns.

In 2006 I started Avex Designs to showcase my portfolio. During that time I've had the opportunity to work with some awesome brands, including: Google, Sony Music, Budweiser, Bank of America, Glassnote Records, Vita Coco, Stoli Vodka, Armani Exchange and more. I have also freelanced for companies such as: Monster.com, Estee Lauder, Atmosphere BBDO, NBC, MRM Worldwide, Nickelodeon, MTV Networks and many other New York based companies.

I love sitting at my desk in Brooklyn, New York - designing, and developing clean, attractive, and intuitive websites. However, there's much more involved in the process. Things like planning, researching, grids, typography, color schemes, coding, semantics, web standards, usability, analytics, hosting, search engine optimization...It can make your head spin. These are things you shouldn't have to worry about. Well, I make sure you don't have to.
